Prof.

Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, has launched an appeal against a High Court ruling that temporarily bars him from fulfilling his duties as Vice-Chancellor.

The injunction was granted following a legal challenge by John Mevemeo, who is seeking to invalidate the renewal of Prof.

Boampong's tenure.

Appointed in 2020, Prof.

Boampong served a three-year term as Vice-Chancellor and was set for a contract renewal by the university's governing council before his tenure was due to expire in July 2023.

The council extended his contract for another three years, a decision that Mevemeo is contesting.

Mevemeo argues that the extension violates both the university's statutes and the 1992 Constitution, pointing out that Prof.

Boampong's new term would extend beyond his mandatory retirement in 2025.

As the legal proceedings continue, Mevemeo requested the High Court to issue an injunction, preventing Prof.

Boampong from acting as Vice-Chancellor until a final judgment is made.

The court granted this injunction on September 4, 2024.

In response, Prof.

Boampong has appealed the ruling, asserting that the decision was flawed and could disrupt the university's operations.

He believes that the injunction poses significant challenges to the effective management of the institution during this critical period.
