The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has explained the party's rationale for holding its presidential primaries early, asserting that the move is a deliberate strategy to give its flagbearer enough time to engage with key stakeholders and promote the party's vision both locally and internationally.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, Haruna Mohammed noted that the NPP's decision to settle on January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries, was not a rushed one but came after careful constitutional review and strategic planning. "It is going to market the candidate enough with regards to us being able to get a contact in the international community, the business community and the various stakeholders across the length and breadth of the world," he stated.

According to him, the extended lead time after the primaries will allow the eventual flagbearer to not only clarify party policies but also keep the governing party in check. "We would get ample time to be able to explain our policy and be able to tackle and put the government on its toes.

Remember we have just 88 members of parliament, so we need to have somebody to be able to get this done."
