Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has emphasised that efforts to achieve gender parity on the nation's highest court must be grounded in merit and qualification, not merely the desire to satisfy numerical targets.

Responding to a question posed by Asokwa Member of Parliament Patricia Appiagyei during his vetting before the Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, 2025, Justice Dzamefe addressed the issue of gender imbalance on the bench. "As much as possible, we should send the best to the Supreme Court or appoint the best wherever," Justice Dzamefe said. "You don't use gender equality to appoint somebody who is not qualified, but because of gender, you appoint just anyone.

I would rather go for one person, even if that one person is the only one qualified." He stressed that while gender equity is important, it must not compromise the competence and integrity required of those who serve on the apex court. "You do not say because of gender, though the person is not qualified for the job, to satisfy gender equality or gender parity," he added.
