The Minister for Local Government, Sanitation, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has unveiled the government's plan to construct modern markets in every district across the country, as part of the 24-hour economy initiative.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday June 12,2025, Ibrahim stated that to realise this initiative, 25% of the Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), amounting to GH¢24 million yearly, will be invested toward developing commercial projects. "What we are doing in every district is identifying the commercial centres across the country.
Once that is done, we can allocate 25% of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to GH¢24 million annually, to develop these commercial hubs," he said.
These modern markets will be strategically located near schools, fire stations, and police posts to provide essential services and enhance safety. "The plan includes building schools near farms, so that it can be harnessed to feed children in school while feeding the markets concurrently(sic).
