Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has questioned the apparent disconnect between the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, and President John Dramani Mahama, following the suspension and subsequent reinstatement of over 60 radio stations across the country.
His comments come in the wake of a turn of events where the Ministry and the National Communications Authority (NCA) issued a directive to shut down several radio stations, including Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM, for regulatory breaches.
Shortly after, President Mahama directed the restoration of their broadcast and offered a 30-day grace period to rectify their infractions.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, June 12, Braimah said the development was puzzling and raised governance concerns. "For me, it is quite curious that the minister and the regulator issue a statement suspending media organisations, and almost immediately, there is another statement from the president directing the suspension of the minister's suspension directive.
