Executive Director of the Crime Check Foundation, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, has raised serious concerns about Ghana's criminal justice system, arguing that the country's handling of legal cases undermines its reputation as a champion of human rights.
Speaking on the wrongful incarceration of individuals like Yaw Asante Agyekum, Kwarteng noted that Ghana's justice system is plagued by excesses, particularly in how accused persons are treated.
Agyekum, who was wrongfully convicted in connection to notorious armed robber Ataa Ayi spent 23 years in prison before his release after the Court of Appeal ruled that his conviction was unjustified due to a lack of evidence.
Kwarteng therefore said on Channel One TV's The Point of View on Wednesday June 12 that "If we pride ourselves as a beacon of democracy, as a champion of human rights, then we are just making a mockery of ourselves as a nation.".
