In response to parliamentary inquiries, Dr.
Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence, has clarified the rationale behind the recent release of 15 senior officers, including Major Generals and equivalents, from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
Appearing before Parliament, Dr Boamah outlined that the decision was rooted in the constitutional mandate of the President, as stipulated in Article 212 of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the Commander-in-Chief to appoint and remove senior military officials in consultation with the Council of State.
He emphasised that the move aligns with established precedents from previous administrations, noting that similar actions were taken in 2001, 2005, and 2009, where senior officers were released irrespective of their proximity to retirement age.
