President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated the new Police Council with a call on it to be impartial in its decisions.The 10-member Council is chaired by the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-AgyemangOther members are Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, Minister for the Interior; Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Inspector-General of Police, and Dr Dominic Ayine, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice.The rest are Daniel Owusu Nyanpong, COP (Rtd) Nathan Kofi Boakye, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Chief Inspector Angel Lolo, COP (Rtd) Rose Bio Atinga and Benson Tongo Baba.Swearing in the Council at the Presidency in Accra on Tuesday, President Mahama said the Council must work to restore confidence in the Police Service.He noted that for far too long, issues of politicisation, arbitrary promotion, disregard for seniority, unfair postings and breach of professional conduct have cast shadow over the service's credibility."Today I charge this Council to be bold and impartial.
Address these grievances swiftly and justly.
Re-establish the trust within the service and between the service and the citizenry."Do not allow power to overshadow fairness.
Let professionalism, not political pressure, guide your decisions," the President stated.President Mahama entreated the Council to support reforms that promote community policing, enhanced accountability mechanism and provide officers with resources, training and psychological support they need to serve honorably and humanely.The welfare of personnel, he emphasized must be central to every policy the new council reviews or implements."Our officers cannot give their best when they are demotivated, underpaid, poorly dressed, poorly housed or working in substandard conditions," he stressed. "This council must lead the conversation on improving the condition of all personnel."Government, President Mahama said was committed to playing its part by providing the service with the needed logistics to deliver.Chairperson of the council, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on behalf of the council acknowledged that their work would have an impact on the safety of our citizens, the morale of our officers, and the trust between law enforcement and the public."I pledge to lead this council with transparency, inclusivity, and a deep respect for the rule of law.
