The Editor of Newscenta newspaper, Elvis Darko, has criticised the government's newly approved GHS1 fuel levy, describing it as a clear sign of desperation for revenue rather than a well-planned solution to the country's longstanding energy crisis.
According to him, the levy, though expected to generate billions of cedis, will not address the root causes of the energy sector's inefficiencies, especially in the absence of meaningful investment and reforms.
Speaking on Channel One TV's Breakfast Daily on Monday, June 9, he warned that the new charge on petroleum products could create unrealistic public expectations and backlash if electricity challenges persist. "The bottom line is that the government is desperately in need of revenue. "This GHS1 levy is intended to purchase fuel for generation and likely settle part of the energy debt.
But the bigger issues like ECG's inefficiency and the piling capacity charges remain unresolved," he said.
