The Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental and Sustainable Energy, Benjamin Nsiah, has raised serious concerns about inefficiencies in Ghana's energy sector, revealing that the country lost an estimated GHC9 billion in 2024 due to system losses.
Speaking on the issue of sustainability and cost-saving in the power sector, Nsiah argued that addressing technical and commercial losses should be a priority if the government is serious about reducing energy sector deficits and stabilising supply. "If you look at 2024, the system losses for Ghana were around 32%.
With that percentage, a kilowatt hour is around 10 cents per kilowatt hour.
So, with the 32%, which translates to about 6,119 gigawatt-hours of generated power, it went to waste." Nsiah noted that when this wastage is translated into monetary terms using the current tariff rate-estimated at GHC15 per litre-the losses amount to approximately GHC9 billion.
