President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major policy shift aimed at reducing deforestation and tackling environmental pollution in Ghana.
Speaking during the national commemoration of World Environment Day in Accra on Thursday, June 5, the President said his administration will soon prohibit the use of wooden furniture in schools nationwide.
He highlighted the contradiction in current practices, noting that while trees are being planted to restore the environment, many are simultaneously being felled to produce school desks and chairs. "We have been planting trees and cutting them down at the same time," he said.
To address this, President Mahama disclosed plans to issue a formal directive that will prohibit the use of wood for school furniture.
