President John Dramani Mahama has justified the GHS1 increase in the fuel levy, emphasising its necessity in stabilising Ghana's energy sector.
Speaking at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday, June 4, during the presentation of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, he acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but stressed its importance in securing the country's energy future. "This decision, though difficult, is necessary and justifiable," he stated.
The levy, projected to generate GHS5.7 billion annually, will be strictly ring-fenced to address key issues within the energy sector.
The President assured citizens that the funds would be used exclusively to settle legacy debts, finance fuel purchases, and prevent recurring power shortages. "This revenue will be strictly ring-fenced to pay down legacy debts, finance ongoing fuel purchases, and avert the risk of recurring power shortages," President Mahama explained.
