The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has called on Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to adopt a more cooperative stance as the government intensifies efforts to address the mounting debts in Ghana's energy sector.
Already, Parliament, on Tuesday, June 3, approved the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, introducing a GHS1 increase in the levy on petroleum products.
The measure, as announced by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, is expected to generate an additional GHS5.7 billion in revenue to help reduce energy sector debts and support a stable power supply.
The energy sector debt, he added, currently stands at $3.1 billion, and $3.7 billion is required to clear the arrears fully.
