The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, has called on the government to reconsider its plan to introduce an additional tax on petroleum products, warning that it contradicts recent fiscal efforts aimed at economic relief for Ghanaians.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, June 3, Mr.
Amoah said the government appears to be making a sudden reversal of progress by proposing new taxes shortly after scrapping burdensome levies like the E-Levy. "I wish the government wouldn't be in a hurry to undo what it has done.
I say this on the back of the fact that not long ago, we were in a hurry to get rid of the E-Levy and some other obnoxious taxes that Ghanaians were complaining about." He noted that the same administration has, in recent months, worked hard to stabilise the Ghana cedi against major foreign currencies, resulting in a noticeable drop in fuel prices across the country.
