The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is reportedly unwell but committed to cooperating fully with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as investigations into an undisclosed matter continue.
His legal counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, speaking in an interview with Asaase Radio, revealed that Wontumi's current health condition prevented him from honouring a scheduled invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. "Because of the arrest, we couldn't honour the CID invitation," Appiah-Kubi explained. "I will call the CID headquarters to inform them about my client's health condition and seek an adjourned date until his condition improves." Despite the setback, the lawyer maintained that the team is cooperating with investigators. "They are still investigating, and at the appropriate time, when he is put before court, we will also prepare as well," he said, adding that "we will be going back to them tomorrow to complete investigations." Wontumi was released from EOCO custody on Monday, June 2, 2025, after being held in relation to an ongoing probe.
Details of the investigation remain unclear.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has issued a strong statement, challenging the government to cease what he describes as "intimidation" and rather take government officials allegedly responsible for causing financial loss to the state to court.
