The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has called on religious leaders, including the Clergy and Imams, as well as the National Peace Council, to intervene in what they describe as the unfair and unlawful arrest and detention of Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
At a press conference in Kumasi, the regional executives expressed concern about the handling of Chairman Wontumi, accusing the state of disregarding due process. "If the state believes Chairman Wontumi has violated any laws, the appropriate legal procedures must be followed in line with the rule of law and natural justice," they stated, urging political actors to respect constitutional provisions and the rights of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
They further appealed for a review of the GHS50 million bail conditions imposed on Wontumi, describing them as excessive.
According to the party, fair and reasonable bail is essential to ensure the accused can adequately prepare a defence and access medical care from trusted professionals.
