The Member of Parliament for Nalerigu/Gambaga, Nurudeen Mohammed Mumuni, has cautioned that the prolonged detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako-popularly known as Chairman Wontumi-could escalate tensions across the country.
Chairman Wontumi has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, May 27, and is currently under investigation for alleged offences including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
The Attorney-General's Department has also linked him to a wider investigation into an international organised crime ring.
Speaking on Eyewitness News' Point Blank, the Nalerigu/Gambaga MP accused the government of using state institutions to pursue partisan interests. "This situation is a threat to our democracy," he said. "Too much politics has been involved.
