President John Dramani Mahama has placed the Volta Lake corridor at the heart of Ghana's future economic transformation, outlining an ambitious plan to turn the basin into a national production and logistics zone under his proposed 24-hour Economy policy. "This corridor, centred on the Volta Lake and the Volta Basin, will become a national production zone and logistics fund," Mahama revealed at a stakeholder consultative meeting at the Jubilee House. "The plan, he said, envisions the cultivation of over two million hectares of arable lakeside land, revitalisation of the lake's fishery sector, and the establishment of a network of industrial parks to serve both domestic and regional markets.

According to Mahama, the economic potential of the Volta Lake remains largely untapped, and the 24-hour Economy programme offers the blueprint to finally maximise it. "New floating assets, lake ports and long-term investment partnerships will be developed in coordination with the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the private sector," he stated.

The former president's vision reflects a broader drive to reposition Ghana's productive capacity beyond traditional sectors by leveraging geography, innovation, and infrastructure.

He added that financing will be a critical component of the project's success, noting that the Development Bank of Ghana and the Venture Capital Trust Fund would be mobilised to scale up support for SMEs, cooperatives, and agribusinesses along the value chain.
