President John Dramani Mahama has outlined an ambitious plan to transform the Volta Lake and Basin into a key pillar of his government's flagship 24-Hour Economy policy, describing it as a national production zone and logistics spine.

Speaking to stakeholders on the implementation of the policy in Accra, Mahama highlighted the Volta Lake Economic Corridor as one of the boldest proposals in the 24-Hour Economy blueprint.

He explained that the corridor will serve as a strategic hub for industrial production, agriculture, logistics, and transport, unlocking economic potential in the region and across the country. "This corridor, centred on the Volta Lake and Basin, will become a national production zone and logistics spine," Mahama stated. "The plan involves cultivating over two million hectares of arable lakeside land, revitalising the lake's fisheries sector, and establishing a chain of industrial parks producing goods for both domestic and regional markets." As part of the vision, Mahama revealed that the lake itself would be activated as a transport highway, allowing for the movement of food, people, and goods by water-providing a more efficient alternative to Ghana's increasingly congested road networks. "To support this corridor the lake will be activated as a transport highway moving food, people and goods more efficiently than our congested roads allow us to do currently."
