The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has defended its decision to cut down several trees along the Atomic-Kwabenya Road, stating that the action was necessary to protect lives and property.
The response comes after environmental group, A ROCHA Ghana raised concerns in a press release on May 20, 2025, over the removal of the trees.
In a statement signed by Anthony Nana Boateng, Director of the Commercialization and Communication Directorate, GAEC explained that the exercise was the result of a detailed risk assessment and consultations with key government agencies.
According to the Commission, many of the trees-some over five decades old-had become structurally compromised due to erosion, with exposed roots and large overhanging branches posing serious threats to motorists and public infrastructure.
