The Minerals Commission has commenced the deployment of the initial 453 Blue Water Guards across seven Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) of the Western Region.
The move is aimed at protecting water bodies from pollution by illegal small-scale miners.
The 453 who are part of an expected 2,000 Blue Water Guards to be trained and deployed nationwide passed out from their training by the Ghana Navy on April 14 this year and are expected to work under the coordination of the Ghana Navy and the Ghana Police Service.
Speaking at the deployment of 213 of the guards in the Ellembelle District, the Western Regional Director of the Minerals Commission, Francis Annobil, revealed that 326 Blue Water Guards have so far been deployed to seven MMDAs.
