The University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has called for the immediate resignation of Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, accusing his office of professional misconduct and ethical breaches following a recent payroll audit report.
The demand comes on the heels of a special payroll verification audit published by the Auditor-General's office, which alleged that the University of Ghana overstated employee compensation by GH¢59.2 million between 2022 and 2024.
But UTAG-UG has firmly rejected the findings, describing the report as misleading, damaging, and lacking procedural fairness. "It appears to us that the audit service is more interested in appearing to be working rather than doing the right thing, and in so doing, they ignore ethical standards that guide their profession," UTAG-UG General Secretary Jerry Joe said.
According to the association, the audit report was published without affording the university an opportunity to respond or provide clarification-an omission UTAG-UG considers a violation of basic auditing ethics. "The University of Ghana maintains that the audit report was not shared with them for them to make comments and clarify any discrepancies before this was made public.
