The Head of the Drainage Department at the Ghana Hydrological Authority, Richard Kofi Amekor, has called for strict enforcement of buffer zones along rivers and drains to mitigate the risk of flooding.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday May 19, Amekor emphasised the importance of maintaining appropriate distances between human settlements and water bodies.
He pointed out that encroachments into these buffer zones, such as the establishment of businesses like vulcanising stations near drains, increase the likelihood of debris being swept into the drainage system during heavy rains.
This accumulation can obstruct water flow and exacerbate flooding. "We need to adhere to the buffer definitions for our rivers or our drains.
