Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has advocated for a critical reform in the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), urging the government to ensure that only financially capable caterers are contracted to prevent disruptions in meal services for schoolchildren.
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, May 18, Eduwatch's Executive Director, Kofi Asare, stressed the need for caterers who can sustain their operations without financial setbacks. "The government should ensure that local government recruits only caterers who have the financial muscle to finance the contracts that they are entering into," he stated.
Eduwatch has been vocal about the need for transparency and efficiency in the GSFP, particularly advocating for decentralised procurement and contract management of caterers.
The organisation has repeatedly highlighted challenges in the programme, including delayed payments, which have forced some caterers to withdraw, ultimately affecting the availability of meals for children.
