Vice Chairman of Parliament's Defence and Interior Committee, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has commended the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for its crackdown on street begging in Accra.

He praised Samuel Basentale Amadu, the acting Comptroller-General of the GIS, and his team for taking decisive action against the growing issue.

Friday's operation by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) led to the arrest of 2,241 foreign nationals involved in organised street begging in the Greater Accra Region.

The intelligence-led operation, carried out in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, targeted key hotspots in the capital.
