The University of Ghana (UG) has rejected claims made in a May 16, 2025 Joy News report that it overstated staff compensation by GH¢59.2 million between 2022 and 2024, calling the report misleading and inaccurate.

In a statement, UG said the figure cited is based on a misunderstanding of its payroll system.

The University explained that it runs two separate payrolls: one funded by the Government of Ghana (GoG), and another from Internally Generated Funds (IGF), used to pay staff such as retired professors working on contract.

These payments, UG said, were legal, approved, and necessary to keep academic and administrative operations running, especially during a period of growing student numbers and limited government hiring approval.
