President John Dramani Mahama has once again emphasised the urgent need for a new city to ease the mounting pressure on Ghana's capital, Accra.
Speaking during his Greater Accra 'Thank You Tour' at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa on Friday, May 16, Mahama pointed to the capital's growing urban challenges as a clear sign that long-term planning is overdue. "Accra is overstretched," Mahama noted, saying "The capital is facing mounting pressure from rapid urbanisation, traffic congestion, and inadequate infrastructure.
It is time we think long-term and plan for a new city that can ease this burden." Mahama first unveiled this ambitious proposal in 2024, announcing plans to initiate a feasibility study for the construction of a new city.
The new urban center, he explained, would function as a complementary administrative and commercial zone, with the aim of relocating certain government ministries, agencies, and financial institutions out of the congested capital.
