Executive Director of Child Rights International, Bright Appiah, has described the recent operation by the Ghana Immigration Service to remove street children and beggars from Accra's major streets as long overdue.

His comments follow the arrest of over 2,000 street children and their guardians in a major swoop aimed at tackling the growing issue of streetism.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on May 16, he acknowledged the importance of the action but raised concerns about the intentions behind the operation and the level of coordination with other relevant institutions. "It is a long overdue action that the state needed to take.

Taking this step, I think that generally, it is a step that we need to take, and we have done that. "Looking at the collective responsibility of institutions to do that, as it is led by the Ghana Immigration Service, so there are a few questions we need to ask.
