The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has urged the College of Health Sciences (CHS) at the University to invest in innovative training and research to help mitigate future pandemics. She expressed optimism that such investments would enhance Ghana's healthcare delivery by providing high-quality training for health personnel, capable of addressing challenges related to pandemics, emerging pathogens, climate change, ageing populations, and non-communicable diseases. She was speaking at the launch of the CHS 25th anniversary celebrations and symposium on Wednesday in Accra. The college comprises six schools, one institute, and two centres spread across the region and campus, all dedicated to transforming lives through exemplary healthcare delivery. The VC emphasised the importance of reflecting on the future as the college commemorates this significant milestone, recognising its substantial contributions to Ghana's healthcare system.Professor Amfo highlighted that this year's celebration represented the college's transformation of lives through education, research, and healthcare delivery, and called for stronger partnerships with other health institutions to foster investments and exchange programs."The University is very proud of its recent accolade, as well as its achievement in producing the best pharmacy students in the whole nation.
In fact, in terms of academic administration, the best staff come from the CHS.I often tell our colleagues at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) that while they were early entrants in this field, we have now established ourselves in the domain, and since the establishment of the CHS, significant changes have taken place," she said.Professor Amfo stated the School of Public Health was now producing public health professionals, contributing to national health policy and practising at the highest levels, and urged students to take their lessons seriously to continue to uphold the good name of the university anywhere they found themselves after graduation. She further noted that the college's flagship research institute, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, had positioned Ghana prominently on the global scientific map, demonstrating that the college had evolved into a robust ecosystem for excellence in health training and research. The Provost of the CHS, Professor Alfred E.
Yawson, added that the college has exemplified excellence since its inception, driven by the collective dedication and unwavering resolve of individuals and partners who contributed to its shared success."We are here to celebrate the complexity that reflects our diverse experiences, through the geographical distribution of our schools.
Thus, we celebrate 25 years of innovation, resourcefulness, and excellence exemplified by each of the constituent schools, through the transformation of lives, and excellence in education, research, and healthcare," Professor Yawson stated. The Board Chair of the college, Mrs Abena Osei-Poku, urged individuals and benevolent organisations to support the college in pursuing deeper research that would help transform the country's healthcare.BY BERNARD BENGHAN
