The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has warned that Ghana's power sector remains vulnerable to repeated shutdown threats unless the government urgently clears its mounting debts to independent power producers and addresses systemic inefficiencies.

His remarks come on the heels of Karpowership's decision to withdraw a shutdown threat after discussions with the Ministry, despite a lingering $400 million debt owed to the company.

The IES boss said the current pattern is unsustainable and reflective of broader financial instability in the energy sector.

While welcoming the intervention on Citi  Eyewitness News on Thursday, May 15, Nana Amoasi VII questioned the long-term sustainability of such last-minute interventions, stressing that Karpowership's threat is only a symptom of deeper financial troubles plaguing the sector. "Can we guarantee that another plant will not do same?" he asked.
