A communication expert, and former Public Affairs Director of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Mrs Maria Kwami Gwira, has cautioned journalists and editors of the various media organisations to be mindful of the negative aspect of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the performance of their duties.Mrs Gwira said even though the AI would help journalists to develop content fast, and production of news would be done in a more advanced manner, the uncontrolled nature of AI remained as a major challenge to society.Speaking at the Volta and Oti Regions celebration of the World Press Freedom Day over the weekend in Ho, on the theme: '' Reporting in the Brave New World, the Role of Artificial Intelligence'', she stressed the need for media organisations to blend the use of AI with human intelligence for accurate and reliable information.According to Mrs Gwira, AI was not a perfect technology to rely on in the production of news, since it at times distorts the names and basic information about a geographical area, and information of local communities, which could result in misinformation and distortion of history.Mrs Gwira, who is also the Executive Director of Dede Media Foundation, said it was crucial for journalists and editors to adhere to traditional human intelligence in gathering information, to ensure accuracy to avoid human rights violations, while technology could be used to promote timely delivery of information. The Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu lauded the activities of journalists in the region for their professionalism, which helped in the development of the region over the years.Mr Gunu said in the brave new world, press freedom  had dual challengers not only traditional treat of censorship but also the restrained, deceptive risks posed by unregulated technology, saying if left unchecked, AI could become a tool to silence rather than empower, and would mislead rather than to clarify an information. The Volta Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Emmanuel Agbaxode, appealed to media owners to improve the salaries of their workers and enhance the conditions of service of media practitioners in the region.FROM SAMUEL AGBEWODE, HO
