The Ghana Police Service has stepped up its fight against illegal mining, arresting 208 suspects and seizing 99 excavators in a nationwide operation aimed at safeguarding water bodies and natural resources.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 13, the Police said the coordinated operations, carried out between March and May 2025, targeted key illegal mining hotspots across the country, with the Western Region recording the most significant haul.

A major raid in Samreboi, along the Tano River, and nearby areas including Wassa Dunkwa and Tigarikrom, led to the arrest of 58 suspects-50 Ghanaians and eight Chinese nationals-and the retrieval of 85 excavators and three bulldozers.

Separately, the Western Regional Command arrested 19 suspects and confiscated three excavators and three pump-action guns.
