A United States court has reduced the $18 million defamation award initially granted to Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in his case against former MP Kennedy Agyapong to just $500. The decision followed a motion for remittitur filed by Kennedy Agyapong, in which he requested that the award be lowered.
In a post on Facebook, Anas acknowledged the judge's decision but stressed that his pursuit of the case was not about the money."Our victory is in the judgment and not the award .This fight has not been about the money, but rather, fight for truth and justice," he wrote.
Anas explained that Agyapong's motion itself was an admission of guilt, noting, "Inherent in his motion, Kennedy Agyapong admitted to having maliciously defamed me." He added that the court granted Agyapong's request because the jury's $18 million award was considered excessive.
However, he maintained that the judge upheld the core verdict - that Kennedy Agyapong had defamed him. "I am happy that not a single allegation was proven against me in court when Kennedy Agyapong was given full opportunity to substantiate," Anas said.Read Also: “I Have Become a Better Person and Will Keep Defending the Truth” - Kennedy Agyapong on U.S.
