Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O.
Kanayo has stirred a global conversation on symbolism and racial representation in the Catholic Church following the election of a new pope after the passing of Pope Francis. In a video on his social media, the movie legend took issue with the centuries-old tradition of using black smoke to indicate an unsuccessful papal election, arguing that it subtly reinforces a negative perception of the color black."When they fail, it's black smoke.
When they succeed, it's white smoke… This has been ingrained in the minds of the world that black is failure," Kanayo remarked.
He suggested that the Church reconsider its use of color symbolism during papal conclaves.
