The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has expressed frustration over persistent resistance from market women towards its fire education initiatives aimed at curbing the frequent outbreak of fires in market centres across the country.

According to STNO 1, Michael Walter, Fire Educator at the Public Relations Department of the GNFS, it took the Service nearly a year to convince market women to permit them to conduct fire safety training sessions. "Our biggest challenge is with the market women.

It took us one year to convince them to allow us to come and train them," he revealed.

In an interview on Channel One TV's breakfast Daily on Friday, May 9, Michael Walter stated that although the GNFS is actively engaging traders through nationwide training and public education, there is little evidence that safety practices are being adopted. "We are building capacity with the market people across the country, but the issue is, do they practice what we tell them?" Walter questioned.
