Award-winning Ghanaian singer Efya has called for stronger local support for female musicians in the country, highlighting the need for more airplay and local streams to help them thrive.
Speaking in an interview with radio host Nana Romeo on Accra FM, Efya was asked why many Ghanaian female artistes, especially emerging ones, are not as widely recognized or heard within the country.
In response, she pointed to streaming and radio exposure as two key challenges. "Our songs are not streamed enough in Ghana," Efya explained. "When you take a close look at the data, you'll see most of our streams are coming from outside the country."According to her, while several female musicians are doing exceptionally well, especially internationally, the lack of consistent local radio airplay limits their visibility at home. "Radio stations in Ghana don't play our songs enough.
That should have been the best stepping stone to push more female talents into the limelight," she added.
