A major power outage that hit parts of Ghana on Thursday has been linked to an incident involving a tipper truck, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have confirmed.

In a joint statement, the two power agencies said the incident occurred at about 1:42 p.m.

on May 1, when a tipper truck offloading stones at a private construction site near the Nkawkaw-Konongo transmission line accidentally struck the line's conductor with its elevated bucket.

The damage led to a cascading system disturbance, causing power plants at Aboadze and Anwomaso to shut down automatically. "This incident caused all power plants at Aboadze and Anwomaso to trip, taking off supply to the Western, Central and Northern parts of the country, as well as some customers in Accra," the statement explained.
