Editor of The Newscenta newspaper, Elvis Darko, says President John Dramani Mahama's nomination of seven new justices to the Supreme Court validates earlier calls by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo for an expanded apex bench to enhance judicial efficiency.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on May 1, 2025, Darko described the move as "right and necessary," arguing that it aligns with the Chief Justice's stated need to address the court's heavy caseload and improve the speed of justice delivery. "For me, appointment to the Supreme Court at this point in time, having seen all that argument that Justice Torkornoo has made, I think President Mahama is right.
He's just confirming that Torkornoo's attempt to get more Judges to the Supreme Court was the right thing to do," he said.
Darko fully endorsed the decision, stating that the situation may even call for more than the current number of nominees. "So if Justice Torkornoo has made the argument that we need more and President Mahama has come and he's appointing more, I agree 100%," he noted.
