Celebrated Nigerian Afrobeats singer Davido has revealed that his brief exit from social media following the tragic loss of his son left a noticeable silence in the Nigerian music space. Speaking in a recent interview with Apple Music's Ebro Darden, the singer, born David Adeleke, opened up about how deeply the death of his three-year-old son, Ifeanyi Adeleke, affected him, forcing him to step away from the spotlight at the height of his career. In November 2022, Davido and his fiancée, Chioma Rowland, were struck by heartbreak when Ifeanyi tragically drowned in a swimming pool at their Lagos mansion.
In response to the painful loss, the singer took a break from both music and social media to mourn privately with his family.
Recalling the public's reaction to his absence, the 'Fall' hitmaker said he was surprised by how quiet the entertainment scene became and how much people - even his critics - missed him. "I knew that people love me because when I was not active online, the whole [Nigerian music] industry was shut down," he said. "I was seeing tweets like, 'We do love him', 'It's so quiet out here', 'Davido come back.' Even the fans who hate me were like, 'Please, come back, we need to bash you'."
