The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has condemned the continued destruction of the environment through illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, calling on the Judiciary to expedite the hearing of related cases to ensure offenders are swiftly and justly punished.

In a statement dated April 26, the GBA acknowledged the severe threat posed by galamsey to Ghana's environment, water bodies, farmlands, and public health.

The Association described the situation as a national emergency that demands urgent and coordinated action from all sectors of government. "The Ghana Bar Association unequivocally condemns the ongoing galamsey activities across the country and calls for immediate, decisive, and sustained action by all arms of government, law enforcement agencies, and relevant stakeholders to eradicate the menace," the statement read.

Specifically, the GBA urged the Judiciary to treat galamsey-related cases as a matter of priority.
