The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called on President John Mahama to immediately revoke the suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, describing the action as unconstitutional and a threat to judicial independence.

This was contained in a resolution passed at its 2025 mid-year conference held on Saturday, April 26, at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.

The GBA passed a firm resolution on the decision, among others condemning the President's action, insisting it contravenes key provisions of the 1992 Constitution. "The Ghana Bar Association calls for the immediate revocation of the suspension of the Chief Justice as it considers the suspension to be unconstitutional," the resolution read.

The Association argued that President Mahama's exercise of discretionary power under Article 146(10) lacks the necessary legal framework, such as a Constitutional Instrument or Regulation, as required under Article 296 of the Constitution.
