Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, has stated that the governing (NDC) can proceed with any "cleansing" of the judiciary they deem necessary to satisfy themselves, following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
President John Mahama, on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.
According to a statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the suspension follows the establishment of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice by the President, in consultation with the Council of State, in relation to three petitions filed against Justice Torkornoo. "President has, in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, determined that a prima facie case has been established in respect of three petitions against the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo," the statement, dated Tuesday, April 22, 2025, read.
Commenting on the issue on Peace FM on Thursday, April 24, 2025, Miracles Aboagye remarked that the Mahama administration could go as far as removing all the Supreme Court judges and appointing NDC stalwarts, including Kwamena Ahwoi and First Lady Lordina Mahama, to the bench. "When this issue started, I was eager to hear their (NDC's) justification for what they were doing.
