Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has justified the government's decision not to renew the mining lease of Gold Fields Ghana, operators of the Damang Mines.
According to the government, the company has failed to meet its obligations under the current lease agreement.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, stated that the company failed to meet the expectations outlined in the original lease agreement. "AGF failed to declare verifiable mineral reserves in its renewal application according to Regulation 189 of the Minerals and Mining Act, an application to extend a mining lease, among others, must include a comprehensive technical report and a programme of mining operations.
Any such report should have verifiable mineral reserves indicating, for example, how many ounces of gold have been found and how much will be mined to justify extension. "Without the declared reserve, the Minerals Commission cannot recommend the extension of the lease.
