Popular Ghanaian traditional music artiste, Osman Sherifatu Gunu, professionally known as Sherifa Gunu, has expressed disappointment over what she describes as the growing disregard for Ghana's indigenous sound by the country's own musicians.
She believes that the persistent mislabelling of traditional music as "colo", a slang term for outdated or backward has stifled its growth and discouraged much-needed collaborations.
In a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz, the singer challenged the narrative that traditional music is antiquated.
Instead, she emphasized that it is a rich and vibrant representation of Ghanaian identity."It will interest you to know that many Ghanaian artistes don't want to work with traditional musicians because they think our music is too outdated and too 'colo'.
