The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced the commencement of controlled spillage at the Weija Dam, as rising water levels triggered by recent rains threaten the structural integrity of the dam and surrounding properties.
In a statement, the Company explained that the consistent increase in inflows has left them with no choice but to initiate the spillage to prevent a possible overflow or collapse of the dam, which could endanger lives and property downstream. "We intend to start the spillage at a very low rate to minimize its impact downstream," the statement assured.
However, GWCL noted that the actual volume of water released would depend on the rate of inflow into the dam, which continues to rise with the onset of the rainy season.
The Company stressed that the spillage would persist as long as water levels remain dangerously high, describing the measure as necessary to protect both the dam and surrounding communities.
