The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has disclosed that the government is set to negotiate a haircut with creditors of AT (formerly AirtelTigo) as part of urgent efforts to prevent the company from collapsing.

Addressing journalists at a press conference on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Ningo-Prampram MP criticised the previous government's acquisition and management of the telecom company, describing it as "disingenuous and unpatriotic." He added that the decision to step in at the time was "ill-informed and reckless," accusing the former administration of abdicating its responsibility to protect Ghana's interests.

According to Sam George, despite a previous debt restructuring effort, AT is still in distress, with its current debt portfolio hovering around $200 million and monthly operating losses hitting GH₵20 million. "The decision to step in at the time can best be described as ill-informed and reckless.

It was an abdication of responsibility by the then administration and minister to the best interests of Ghana.
