Ghana's long-awaited bid to become the first African country to export timber products to the European Union (EU) under the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) licensing regime is at risk, due to Parliament's failure to ratify crucial timber rights before its recent recess.
Beginning June 15, 2025, all timber exports to the EU must carry a FLEGT licence-signaling compliance with legal and sustainable forest management practices.
Without this licence, Ghana's timber exports will be barred from entering the EU, currently the country's largest market for wood products.
