Ghana's Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrissu, has given firm assurances that President John Dramani Mahama has no intention whatsoever to interfere in the academic freedom of any educational institution in the country.
Speaking at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE) initiative - a network of 20 universities across the continent - Haruna Iddrissu was clear about the president's respect for the autonomy of universities. "The President believes in supporting our institutions, whether financially or otherwise, to promote knowledge and innovation," Iddrissu stated. "However, he will not engage in any action that compromises the academic liberty of our universities. "The one who holds the political will of our Republic is the President, and I'm here to assure you as he has assured many heads of institutions that he has no intention to interfere. "Instead, he is committed to enhancing the academic freedom of our universities," he added.
