The Supreme Court will on Wednesday, April 9, hear a case challenging the procedure being used to initiate the possible removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Filed by Old Tafo MP, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the suit questions President John Mahama's move to consult the Council of State without first informing the Chief Justice or giving her a chance to respond to allegations raised in petitions against her, an action Assafuah argues breaches Article 146(6) of the Constitution.

The MP, represented by former Attorney-General Godfred Dame, insists the approach breaches the Constitution and undermines judicial independence.

The outcome could establish the legal requirements that must be met before any process to remove a Chief Justice can commence.
