The Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, has announced a ban on extravagant Islamic weddings within his jurisdiction, citing concerns over rising costs and non-conformity with Islamic practices.
The ban, effective from Wednesday, March 5, 2025, follows consultations with the Islamic clergy and aims to promote modest and affordable marriage ceremonies. "This decision aims to curb deviant practices which set high wedding costs, therefore making it difficult for many youth to get married," the Chief Imam stated in an official letter.
Among the practices he seeks to abolish are elaborate wedding receptions that involve multiple outfit changes by couples, male beauticians dressing the opposite sex, and record dance parties, commonly referred to as "jams." Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu emphasized the importance of upholding Islamic traditions and called on the community's support to enforce the ban. "I am therefore counting on your usual cooperation to help in the full operationalization of this ban," he urged.
The directive has been communicated to key stakeholders, including the Bolewura (Paramount Chief of the Bole Traditional Area), the police commander, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and local media houses like Nkilgi FM and Yagbon FM.
